Growing Green Beans on a Trellis
As any gardener knows, after the planting comes the maintenance. I’m going to show you the way I’m growing green beans on a trellis. This technique will work well with any climbing plant, edible or not.
Building the green bean trellis.
I use hog and cattle panels quite a bit around here, they are multi-use items, they get a real workout in the garden. I use them for cucumber trellises, to fence plants I don’t want the chickens getting into, holding my compost pile, heck you name it! The good part is they will last for ever in the garden setting, they are sturdy and it takes a while for the rust to really set in on them.
Anyway , I’m building the green bean trellis out of a livestock panel and two T-posts, this is a quick and easy way to put a trellis up for any climbing plant, beans, peas, cucumbers you name it.
Here in the picture you see the T-post and T-post driver for those of you unfamiliar with Fence building, this is one of mans greatest inventions!
First thing, Drive in your first T-post at the end of your row of green beans, you don’t have to drive it in like your setting fence , just in enough to hold up the panel. Don’t drive it in to close to the plants, don’t want to disturb the roots if at all possible.
Next drive the second T-post , make sure it is inside the length of your panel, usually less than 16 feet, again making sure not to drive it down over you green beans, then lean the panel up against the two T-posts and secure it with some wire or twine.
There you have it, Growing Green Beans on A Trellis
And there you have it, you can scale this operation up as large as you like, and if you need the green bean trellis smaller , the panels are easy to cut with a small pair of bolt cutters or a metal cutting saw blade.
Like I said, use this for anything you want to grow up off the ground, Or use a panel to make a grape arbor, there are a million things to do with these livestock panels including growing green beans on a trellis!
