Purple Hull Peas

We started the purple hull peas in the garden again this year, If your followed us back a few years ago you know we had quite the bounty from the purple hull peas. Then last year the drought took a heavy toll on everything in the garden, i was spending about $150 a month on water just to keep the little bit that I had alive. Well this year it looks like we will have enough water to get the purple hull peas a good start at least!

I have about five rows by about 60 feet each, then another 8 rows of about forty feet each next door at moms place, we shouldn’t run out of peas this year!

Purple Hull Peas by the Weeks

Here are the peas exactly seven days after seeding, you can still see the seed parts. I can say we were lucky we got a steady rain the day after we seeded these purple hull peas, and the temps were in the 80′s for most of the week, perfect conditions for germination!

Purple Hull Pea Spacing.

Here they are after two weeks, you can see the first true leaves are large and the new growth is starting to show, so far this is just seed energy being used, this week I will side dress with some composted material out of the compost pile, then watch them explode with growth!

Here is a shot of the row spacing and seed rate, as you can see the purple hull peas are planted pretty close together, this is from the Earthway Garden Seeder, you really have to keep your plates straight, I used one that was spaced a little close, this is what I got. I will go back thru and cull a few of these to give them a little breathing room. Ideally I want them to be spaced about 1-2 plants every 4-6 inches, give or take!

I’ll keep you updated on these purple hulls as the season progresses, along with all the other good stuff here at the Garden.
